First (proper) Day of Uni!
Today's my first proper day of uni! I technically started yesterday, but all I had was one lecture. Today I've got two lectures (Spanish and Indigenous Studies) and a club meeting for the Science Fiction and Fantasy Club!
I've just had my Spanish lecture, and I'm sat in the Pride Room (what a great room!) typing this right now and munching on baby carrots. Update on the YouTube fandango: I can't do anything about it until the 29th of March, because apparently me deactivating and reactivating my AdSense account counted as changing the account to YouTube, so I've gotta wait 30 days to change it. Once that's over, I'll change it from a business account to an individual account, and hallelujah! I'll get some money! Probably not that $70 though. I've mostly gotten over that, but I'm still gonna be sad about it for a while.
But enough of sadness! I've got a musical to look forward to!
Our lecturer for Indigenous Studies sent the whole class out an email t'other day. Actually he's the lecturer for our first unit, which is called "Aboriginal Encounters: Strangers in our Backyard". Anyway, the lecturer emailed us, being like "Get ready for your first lecture! Aboriginal Encounters: The Musical!" And I'm sure I speak for the whole class when I say, I read that and went "............huh???"
So yeah, I'm hyped for that. I've got no clue what exactly he means by the statement that our first lecture is gonna be a musical, but I'm excited to see what he's got planned. I'm just praying it's not cringe.
After that, I've got a meeting with the Science Fiction and Fantasy Club, or whatever they're called. I'm gonna see the friend I made yesterday there. Rilyn is cool! They are from California, so I get to have fun listening to the accent of an Australian who grew up in America. My favourite thing to listen to with those kinds of people is the way they treat the LOT, THOUGHT and PALM lexical sets, as well as the TRAP-BATH Split. A lot of Americans have the COT-CAUGHT Merger and the Father-Bother Merger, and no TRAP-BATH Split, whereas every Australian distinguishes all three vowels, each with the better part of a TRAP-BATH Split.
If you're a long-time fan of mine (those don't exist), you'll remember my friend Jack. Born in 2005, he grew up in Texas with Australian parents, and moved back here for boarding school at some point before 2018. I got to hear, over the six years we did school together, the gradual degradation of his accent from mostly pure General American to something much stranger. His TRAP-BATH Split was highly variable: I remember one time where he said the word "banana" twice in one sentence, once with the Split, and once without, much to the confusion of our mutual friend Oxley. I'm not sure if he had the COT-CAUGHT Merger originally, but he definitely distinguished them by the time he graduated.
Anyway, yeah, that's exciting. After that I might head out to the Trans Folk of WA Youth Space, if I've got any spoons left in me. And then tonight I'm going to the local theatre, as I do every Tuesday night, to play improv games. I'm doing a performance in two months with them where we do, like, a Whose Line is it Anyway? style live improv show. It's community theatre, so it's going to be thoroughly mediocre, but beggers can't be choosers. I'm a theatre kid at heart, I need my fix!
I'll stop writing now and give you an update after my Indigenous Studies lecture.
It was so underwhelming!!! I was completely non-whelmed. Not even a little bit off-kilter.
It wasn't a musical at all! He just played some songs for us!! One of them was Treaty by Yothu Yindi, which is a non-negotiable banger. But still! Anyway, after that lecture I went to the nerd club and we watched Pacific Rim. It's a dumb action movie. I didn't pay too much attention tho, I was too busy making a map of Indigenous toponyms. I didn't go to trans club cuz I was totally out of spoons, but I did go to theatre. I was a little late cuz I was busy freaking out over my card, which I can't use right now for some bizarre reason. The bank just won't let me use my account, and their help line had knocked off for the night by the time I realised it wasn't just a system bug.
Improv was good! I won all the singing games.
Goodnight
